Like the rest of Sikkim, not much is known about the early history of Gangtok. The earliest records date from the construction of the hermitic Gangtok monastery in 1716. Gangtok remained a small hamlet until the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840 made it a pilgrimage center. Best time to visit Gangtok -

The best time to visit Gangtok, is between October & December when clear views of the Himalayan peaks are guaranteed or  between March and May when the flowers are blooming. January &February have snow in the higher altitudes and because of which visits to many of the tourist spots are not possible, as roads remain closed due to heavy snowfall . June to September gets heavy rains that causes landslides which often disrupt communication.
